Admiral Togo: The Nelson of the East
Admiral Togo Heihachiro was a Japanese naval commander who led the Imperial Japanese Navy to victory in the Russo-Japanese War. He is considered one of the greatest naval commanders in history, and is often compared to Admiral Horatio Nelson, the British naval commander who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Togo was born in 1848 in Kagoshima, Japan. He joined the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1869, and quickly rose through the ranks. He served in the First Sino-Japanese War, and was promoted to captain in 1894.
In 1904, the Russo-Japanese War broke out. Togo was given command of the Combined Fleet, and led the Japanese to a series of victories. He defeated the Russian fleet at the Battle of Tsushima, which was one of the most decisive naval victories in history.
After the war, Togo was promoted to admiral. He served as Chief of the Naval General Staff from 1905 to 1909, and was awarded the Free Download of the Rising Sun, Japan's highest military honor.
