John Hay was born in Salem, Indiana, in 1838. His father was a physician and his mother was a devout Presbyterian. Hay was a bright and precocious child, and he excelled in his studies. He graduated from Brown University in 1858 and then studied law at Harvard Law School. However, Hay's legal career was cut short by the outbreak of the Civil War.
In 1861, Hay volunteered to serve in the Union Army. He was assigned to the staff of General Robert E. Lee, and he served with distinction throughout the war. In 1864, Hay was appointed private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln. He served in this capacity until Lincoln's assassination in 1865.
After Lincoln's death, Hay returned to civilian life. He worked as a journalist and a diplomat, and he served as the United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1897 to 1898. In 1898, Hay was appointed Secretary of State by President William McKinley. He served in this capacity until McKinley's assassination in 1901.
Hay continued to serve as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the end of the Spanish-American War and the acquisition of the Philippines by the United States. Hay also played a leading role in the development of the Open Door Policy, which aimed to preserve the territorial integrity of China.
Hay died in 1905 at the age of 66. He was a brilliant and accomplished man who made a significant contribution to American history. His diaries and letters are a valuable source of information about the inner workings of American politics during a time of great change and upheaval.
