About the Author
Ruth Kluger was born in Vienna in 1931. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a doctor. In 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and Kluger's family was forced to flee. They went to England, where they lived for a year before coming to the United States in 1940.
