New/Old Approach to Peacemaking: Little of Justice, Peacebuilding?
In his book New/Old Approach to Peacemaking: Little of Justice, Peacebuilding? author John Paul Lederach explores the challenges of peacemaking in the 21st century. Lederach argues that traditional approaches to peacemaking have failed to address the root causes of conflict, and that a new approach is needed that focuses on justice and peacebuilding.
Lederach identifies four key challenges to peacemaking in the 21st century:
- The rise of globalized violence. Conflict is no longer confined to specific regions or countries. It is now a global phenomenon, fueled by factors such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.
- The fragmentation of the international system. The world is increasingly divided into competing blocs, each with its own interests and priorities. This makes it difficult to build consensus on how to address global challenges.
- The rise of new technologies. New technologies, such as social media and artificial intelligence, can be used to spread propaganda and hate speech, and to mobilize people for violence.
- The decline of trust in institutions. People are increasingly losing trust in governments, international organizations, and other institutions. This makes it difficult to build the trust that is necessary for peace.
Lederach argues that traditional approaches to peacemaking have failed to address these challenges. He argues that these approaches have focused too much on short-term solutions, such as ceasefires and peace agreements, and not enough on addressing the root causes of conflict. He also argues that these approaches have been too top-down, and have not involved local communities in the peacemaking process.

Lederach proposes a new approach to peacemaking that focuses on justice and peacebuilding. He argues that peace cannot be achieved without justice, and that peacebuilding must be a long-term process that involves all stakeholders. He also argues that peacemaking must be bottom-up, and must involve local communities in the process.
Lederach's book is a timely and important contribution to the field of peacemaking. He offers a clear-eyed assessment of the challenges facing peacemakers in the 21st century, and he proposes a new approach that is more likely to be successful in achieving lasting peace.
John Paul Lederach is a professor of international peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of numerous books on peacemaking, including The Moral Imagination: The Art and Soul of Building Peace and When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Building Peace in Traumatized Societies.
