Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was a gifted athlete and a passionate humanitarian. This book tells the story of his life and career, from his humble beginnings in Puerto Rico to his tragic death in a plane crash.

Early Life

Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven children. His father was a sugar cane worker and his mother was a homemaker. Professional Career

Clemente signed his first professional contract with the Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican Winter League in 1952. He played for the Crabbers for three seasons before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. Clemente made his major league debut on April 17, 1955. He quickly became a star player, and he helped the Dodgers win the World Series in 1955 and 1959.

In 1960, Clemente was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for the Pirates for the rest of his career, and he helped them win the World Series in 1960 and 1971. Clemente was a versatile player who could play both the outfield and the infield. He was also a gifted hitter and fielder. He won the National League batting title four times, and he won the Gold Glove Award for outfield play 12 times.

Humanitarian Work

Clemente was not only a great baseball player, but he was also a passionate humanitarian. He was deeply concerned about the plight of the poor and disadvantaged, and he worked tirelessly to help them. He founded the Roberto Clemente Foundation in 1973, and the foundation has continued to provide aid to the needy around the world.

Tragic Death

Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972. He was flying to Nicaragua to deliver aid to earthquake victims when his plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Clemente was 38 years old.
