About the Author
Sadie Joyce Miller is the debut novel of author Alice Walker. Walker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who is known for her powerful and moving stories about the lives of African Americans in the South.
Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia, in 1944. She grew up in a poor family, and she was often the target of racism. Walker attended Spelman College and Sarah Lawrence College. After graduating from college, she worked as a social worker and a teacher.
Walker's first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland, was published in 1970. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Walker has since published more than 20 novels, including The Color Purple, Possessing the Secret of Joy, and By the Light of My Father's Smile.
Walker is a vocal activist for social justice, and her work often explores the themes of racism, sexism, and poverty. She is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
