A Life of Golf
Payne Stewart was born in Springfield, Missouri, in 1957. He began playing golf at the age of 5 and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. He won his first tournament at the age of 12 and went on to win the Missouri State Amateur Championship three times. After graduating from college, Stewart turned professional in 1979.
Stewart's professional career got off to a slow start. He struggled to make a name for himself on the PGA Tour and spent several years playing on the minor league circuits. But in 1989, Stewart finally broke through with his first PGA Tour victory at the Southern Open. He went on to win 10 more PGA Tour events, including the 1991 U.S. Open and the 1999 PGA Championship.
Stewart was known for his aggressive style of play and his colorful personality. He was a fan favorite and was always willing to give back to the game. He founded the Payne Stewart Foundation, which supports junior golf programs and other charitable causes.
A Tragic Death
On October 25, 1999, Stewart was piloting a Learjet 35 from Orlando, Florida, to Dallas, Texas. The plane crashed in South Dakota, killing Stewart and all five of his passengers. The cause of the crash was never determined, but it is believed that Stewart may have suffered a heart attack or stroke while flying the plane.
Stewart's death was a shock to the golf world and to his many fans. He was one of the most popular and successful golfers of his generation, and his death was a huge loss to the game. Stewart's legacy lives on through the Payne Stewart Foundation and through the many young golfers who have been inspired by his story.
