Early Life and Career

Wes Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1939. His father was a Methodist minister, and his mother was a devout Catholic. Craven's early life was marked by tragedy. His father died when he was five years old, and his mother remarried an abusive alcoholic. Craven found solace in movies, and he began making his own films at a young age.

After graduating from high school, Craven attended Wheaton College in Illinois. He studied English and philosophy, but he also continued to make films. In 1964, he directed his first feature film, The Last House on the Left. The film was a critical and commercial failure, but it established Craven as a director with a unique vision.

The Nightmare on Elm Street

In the early 1980s, Craven wrote and directed A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film was a huge success, and it launched the career of a new horror icon, Freddy Krueger. Craven followed up A Nightmare on Elm Street with a series of successful horror films, including Scream (1996) and Red Eye (2005).

Craven's films are often praised for their suspenseful atmosphere, their clever use of gore, and their sharp social commentary. Craven was a master of horror, but he also used his films to explore important issues such as child abuse, homophobia, and the dangers of social media.

Legacy

Wes Craven died in 2015, but his legacy lives on. His films continue to be enjoyed by audiences around the world, and he is considered one of the most important figures in the history of horror cinema. In Wes Craven: The Man and His Nightmares, Mark Shapiro provides a fascinating and insightful look at the life and work of a true master of horror.
