Blackwell was born in Bristol, England, in 1821. Her father was a sugar refiner, and her mother was a devout Christian. Blackwell was raised in a strict religious environment, and she was taught to believe that women were inferior to men. However, Blackwell was also a bright and ambitious young woman, and she was determined to make a difference in the world.

In 1847, Blackwell enrolled at the Geneva Medical College in New York. She was the only woman in her class, and she faced a great deal of discrimination and prejudice from her fellow students and professors. However, Blackwell persevered, and she graduated from medical school in 1849.

After graduating from medical school, Blackwell opened a small clinic in New York City. She specialized in treating women and children, and she quickly became known for her skill and compassion. Blackwell also became involved in the women's rights movement, and she spoke out in favor of women's suffrage and equal access to education and employment.

In 1857, Blackwell co-founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. This was the first hospital in the United States to be staffed by women physicians. Blackwell also helped to establish the Women's Medical College of the New York Infirmary, which was the first medical school in the United States to be open to women.
