From Polio Survivor to Disability Rights Activist
Judy Heumann was born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of two, she contracted polio, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. Despite her disability, Heumann was determined to live a full and independent life. She attended public schools and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Long Island University and a master's degree from New York University.
In the early 1970s, Heumann became involved in the disability rights movement. She was a founding member of the Disabled in Action group, which fought for the rights of people with disabilities to access education, employment, and public transportation. Heumann also played a leading role in the Section 504 protests, which forced the federal government to implement the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The ADA was a landmark piece of legislation that prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. It has made a significant difference in the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities.
A Life of Advocacy and Activism
Since the passage of the ADA, Heumann has continued to be a leading advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. She has served as the Assistant Secretary for Disability Policy at the U.S. Department of Education and the World Bank's Senior Disability Advisor. She is also the founder of the Heumann Center for Inclusive Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Heumann's work has had a profound impact on the lives of people with disabilities around the world. She is a tireless advocate for the rights of all people, regardless of their abilities.
An Unrepentant Memoir
