By Philippe Bourgois and Jeff Schonberg

Righteous Dopefiend is a groundbreaking ethnography that explores the lives of drug users in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. The book is based on the authors' four-year participant observation study of a group of crack addicts, and it provides a unique and intimate look at the world of addiction.

Bourgois and Schonberg argue that drug addiction is not simply a matter of individual pathology, but rather a product of social and economic factors. They show how the Tenderloin's drug market is a complex and highly organized system, and they argue that drug users are not simply victims of their addiction, but rather active participants in a system that exploits their vulnerability.

Righteous Dopefiend is a powerful and moving account of the lives of drug users. It is a must-read for anyone interested in addiction, poverty, or the urban experience.
