Undaunted Valor is an in-depth account of the 1st Cavalry Division's 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion during the Vietnam War. The book chronicles the unit's daring missions, heroic rescues, and the personal stories of the men who served in its ranks.

The 229th was one of the most decorated helicopter units in the Vietnam War, earning two Presidential Unit Citations and numerous other awards for its valor and heroism. The unit's motto, "Undaunted Valor," was a fitting tribute to the men who flew and fought in its helicopters.

Undaunted Valor is based on extensive research, including interviews with dozens of veterans of the 229th. The book provides a detailed and accurate account of the unit's operations, from its early days in the Ia Drang Valley to its final days in Cambodia.

The book also tells the personal stories of the men who served in the 229th. These stories are both inspiring and heartbreaking, and they provide a glimpse into the human side of the Vietnam War.

Undaunted Valor is a must-read for anyone interested in the Vietnam War, helicopter warfare, or military history. It is a tribute to the brave men of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, and it is a reminder of the sacrifices that were made by all who served in Vietnam.

Chapter 1: The Early Days

The 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion was activated on 15 July 1965 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The unit was originally equipped with the UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, but it later transitioned to the AH-1 Cobra helicopter.

The 229th arrived in Vietnam in October 1965 and was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. The unit's first combat mission was in the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965.

Chapter 2: The Ia Drang Valley

The Ia Drang Valley was one of the most significant battles of the Vietnam War. The battle took place from 14 to 18 November 1965 and involved the 1st Cavalry Division and the North Vietnamese Army.

The 229th played a critical role in the battle, providing air support for the ground troops. The unit's helicopters were used to transport troops, evacuate wounded, and provide fire support.

Chapter 3: The Tet Offensive

The Tet Offensive was a major offensive launched by the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong in January 1968. The offensive was a surprise attack and it caught the Americans and their South Vietnamese allies off guard.

The 229th was heavily involved in the fighting during the Tet Offensive. The unit's helicopters were used to transport troops, evacuate wounded, and provide fire support. The unit also played a key role in the defense of Khe Sanh.

Chapter 4: Cambodia

In 1970, the 229th was deployed to Cambodia as part of the Cambodian Campaign. The unit's mission was to search for and destroy North Vietnamese sanctuaries in Cambodia.

The 229th conducted a number of successful operations in Cambodia, but the unit also suffered some heavy losses. In May 1970, the unit was involved in a fierce battle at Fire Support Base Charlie, which resulted in the loss of several helicopters and crew members.

Chapter 5: The Legacy of the 229th

The 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion was deactivated in 1973. The unit's legacy lives on, however, in the many veterans who served in its ranks.

The 229th was one of the most decorated helicopter units in the Vietnam War. The unit's men were awarded two Presidential Unit Citations and numerous other awards for their valor and heroism.

The 229th's legacy is also one of sacrifice. The unit lost 103 men killed in action during the Vietnam War. These men gave their lives in defense of their country and their comrades.
