About the Book
In Keeping An Eye Open, T.J. Clark offers a wide-ranging collection of essays that explore the relationship between art and politics, art and history, and art and everyday life. Clark's writing is incisive, witty, and erudite, and he offers a unique perspective on the art world.
The essays in Keeping An Eye Open are divided into four sections: "The Politics of Art," "The History of Art," "The Everyday Life of Art," and "The Future of Art." In the first section, Clark examines the ways in which art has been used to promote political agendas, from the propaganda of the Soviet Union to the advertising of consumer goods. In the second section, he explores the ways in which art has been shaped by historical events, from the French Revolution to the rise of the modern nation-state. In the third section, he examines the ways in which art has been integrated into everyday life, from the paintings that hang on our walls to the clothes that we wear. And in the fourth section, he speculates on the future of art in the digital age.
Keeping An Eye Open is an essential read for anyone interested in art, art criticism, or art history. Clark's insights are invaluable, and his writing is a pleasure to read.
